1. When you lease a car you never have to worry about car repairs happening. All new cars come with a lease that covers any drive train repairs like engines, transmissions, or any other major mechanical mishaps. Yes, when you buy a car you get the same warranties but after the warranty is up you are on your own.

2. Since the manufacturer is picking up the tab on all repairs you will be able to bring your car into the dealership without having to spend a dollar. With most dealerships or car repair shops charging over $100 an hour just to take a look at your car this will save you a ton of money.

3. You are getting a new car every two or three years. This way you can change with the times and drive a number of different cars in a life time.

4. All cars and trucks are liabilities. They will depreciate. When you lease your car you will not have to worry how much it really is going to be worth at the end of your contract. Hopefully the car manufacturer charged you enough in your monthly payment where you would have paid down how much it was intended to depreciate.

5. Lease payments are always going to be less than car payments. Most car loans are 5 years now. Take a $30,000 car over 5 years and even with a 0% interest rate. If you bought the car you would pay $500 a month for that car. A lease payment would be around $350 saving you $150 a month. This way you can keep your money and invest it. If you really like the car at the end then you can buy the remaining balance out right.

6. It is usually easier to get approved on a lease than on a loan. The car manufacturers need to get somebody else paying down the balance on the loan and are willing to loosen their guidelines more than a bank because they need to make a sale. A bank sees you as a risk because they are giving you money to buy something that will be worth less the second you take it off the dealer lot. If you default on the loan, the bank is stuck with a vehicle that is worth less than what the balance of the loan is.

7. Most car leases are pretty straight forward and up front. Usually, every element of the deal, lease price, term, money factor, residual, vehicle make and model is already in place and cannot be changed. This way you know you are getting a good deal. You still can negotiate if you want to, but most cars like a Ford Focus or Ford Fusion are priced as is. Ford knows that they need to get a lot of them out the doors to make a profit so they already go down to that profit margin they need to be competitive. If you are thinking about leasing a truck or SUV then try negotiating. Most of those vehicles are priced higher and can come down.

8. Leasing takes the guess work of having to deal with a used car in the future. People think that getting a 3 to 6 year old car will benefit them in the long run because they will pay it off if they had to take a loan. All that happens now is they have a car payment and have to pay for car repairs. Most used car loans are 3 years. Take a $10k car loan at 0% and your payment is still $277 a month. This is hoping you don’t have any car repairs along the way. When getting a lease you could probably get the same new car for around the same monthly payment and not have to worry about $100 an hour labor charges.

9. New cars do not have to be maintained as much as old ones because you know you are going to be turning it in. This does not mean to not change the oil but little things like waxing it every month. The car is still new and you are not supposed to wax a car for the first 6 months of getting it anyways. The paint is still settling from the factory.

10. Piece of mind. How many times have you been driving around in your old beat up clunker and something broke. Your car repairs cost over $1k and it puts you in debt. Its a never ending cycle with cars. Sure, car companies are making better cars, but they are man made. They will break down no matter if it is a Mercedes, Lexus, or a Ford.

1. Oil prices are determined by a economic term called supply and demand. Right now in the world the demand for oil is higher than the supply. It’s not that the oil companies are not pumping the oil its that the people of Earth are consuming more than ever.

2. The rest of the world is trying to act like Americans and Americans are trying to act like them. Places like Russia, China, India, and Brazil are all buying cars of their own now and everybody is trying to get to the point where they own their own car instead of sharing the family vehicle like they use to. In the United States it is common to have every person in the house over the age of 16 to have their own car.

3. Oil companies are in business to make money. Don’t blame them for trying to do it. You are probably invested with them one way or another in your 401k, stocks, mutual funds, or pension. This is good news when they are making money. Its just that with the increase in gas prices so dramatically our wages have not kept up.

4. The only way to lower gas and oil prices is to either not use it at all or everybody stop using so much of it. This goes back to the supply and demand theory.

5. We were raised and told to change our oil every 3000 miles. We all assumed this was what was best for the car and what was recommended by the car manufacturer. Really it was the marketing of the oil companies to use more of their oil. If they could get you to think that you needed to change your oil every 3000 miles or every 4 months than you would be going to your local instant oil change place 3 times a year. This is good news for them.

6. Since this was the unwritten rule for so many years nobody really questioned it. Its funny because back in the 1950s and 1960s you didn’t change your oil you checked your oil. That’s right, you opened up the hood, pulled out the dipstick and made sure there was enough in there. If it was low you would put a quart or two in there. This was just the same as changing the oil but you didn’t drain it all out or change the oil filter. No need to drain it because cars back then would burn oil a lot more than the cars of today. I remember my dad telling me stories of driving in his 1970 Ford Mustang and taking the oil filter off once a year or longer.

7. Over the past 20 years changing your oil and the oil filter have been said this is what any good car owner would do. Not only are they telling you to change the oil but the filter too every 4 or 6 months. Now you are getting charged for the filter which is more profits for them.

8. Do you think the car of today needs to have its oil changed every 3000 miles to maintain its peak performance? Could it be the oil companies just trying to make more of a profit? I believe that we need to make a stand and stop changing our oil every 3000 miles. By doing so it will help in lowering oil and gas prices. With all of the problems going on in our economy right now we need to question some of the unwritten rules. People are having to use their home equity lines of credit just to be able to make the payments on their 30 year fixed rate mortgage so their house does not get foreclosed on. This never ending cycle needs to be broke so we all can get back on financial track.

9. Some car companies have admitted that you do not need to change your oil every 3000 miles and 5000 miles would be okay. Thank you car companies for stepping up and saying so. Unfortunately they say so in your owners manual for the car and do not say it on TV. You still see the adds from big oil companies saying to change it every 3000. Do you remember the last time you had your oil and filter changed? Did it cost you almost $50 to do so. Think about if you changed your oil every 6000 miles instead of 3000. This would save you $100 a year just on oil changes. For some smaller cars like a Ford Focus you could even stretch it out to 7500 miles. The smaller cars get less wear and tear on them then do a let’s say a Ford F-150. Even with a truck you should still go to 5000 miles. Oil changes for trucks are usually $5-$10 higher than a car because they need more oil in the engine block. I own a Ford Fusion and took it up to 6500 miles before my first oil change. I always remember to look at the sticker they put on my window and add 3000 miles to whatever that number says. They always say that I’m way over do but I tell them that my miles per gallon have not changed and the car ran fine.

10. If all Americans started changing their oil at 5000 miles instead of 3000 miles this would help reduce the demand for oil. This is not the cure all of ideas but it will work. You would be consuming half of the oil you normally do in a year to operate your car. Your car will not perform marginally better or less with the older oil. Take that number and times it by every single person in America that changes their oil every 300 miles. There are approximately 143 million cars and trucks on the road in the United States as of July 2008. Let’s use the $100 a year in savings for the average car owner x 143 million cars = $14,300,000,000 not going to the oil companies every year just in oil changes. This is just in the United States. Think about that number around the world. Oil prices would have to come down because of supply and demand. Do you think it makes sense now to change your oil every 5000 miles?

1. The Detroit News posted an article talking about Governor Granholm proposing to lower speed limits on Michigan freeways due to high gas prices. This is dumb.

2. I remember in the past 10 years I have seen gas prices go from $.99 for MIDGRADE to $4.17 for REGULAR as of today. If driving slower to save gas was such an issue why did no brainiacs think about this when gas hit $2 then $3 a gallon. The reason is cause we own a car to be able to get from place to place faster not slower.

3. In a previous post of mine about speed limits I talked about how we need to get rid of them so people can get from place to place faster.

4. Let’s leave it up to the people to decide how slow or fast they want to drive, not tell them how fast. Get rid of the speed limits and you know what, if you want to do 55mph than stay in the far right lane. If you want to do 100mph stay in the left.

5. If its gas prices the government is worried about then you need to start promoting people driving less or not at all. Hello 4 day work week.

6. I appreciate that Governor Jenny wants to save us money but if anything she is taking money out of our pocket. Now with traffic moving slower that’s going to be more time idling at stop lights because now the two lights you normally have to sit through at an intersection will turn into three because everybody getting to that light has to take more time to get there.

7. Gas prices are going to continue going up, there is no doubt about that. If its not us consuming the oil its Brazil, Russia, or India. They want to be like us and we need to be more like how they were. Riding mopeds to work and jamming into a train.

8. Here is a good way to save the citizens gas money, how about public transportation? The Detroit Tri-County area has probably the worst public transportation system for any major city. There are no light rails or trains that connect the suburbs to the city. If there was one I’m sure, no wait, positive that people would adapt and get on that train and ride it to work. Who wouldn’t want to do that. Now you don’t have to pay attention to the road driving in rush hour in the morning. You could have your cup of coffee and read the newspaper in the 15-20 minutes it would probably take. Better yet, how about a quick cat nap.

9. What about the car companies. You know the Big 3 or what use to be the Big 3. Im not going to start about how poorly they have planned with the trucks and not building cars. All that needs to be done is the car manufacturers need to change the gearing in their cars. Its that easy. Most American made cars have higher gears which allow for quicker starts but lower top end speeds. Cars manufactured in Germany and throughout Europe come with lower gear ratios which allow for higher speeds while keeping RPM’s down. The RPM’s is what burns the gas not the speed. The first American car company to market a car built for highway driving is going to get a winner.

10. Its one more liberty that “The Man” will be taking from us telling us what to do instead of letting the people decide. What’s funny about this is that I obey speed limits. Most of my friends hate letting me drive because I never go faster than the posted limit. Its not that I’m not capable of handling a car at 100mph, its just that I don’t want to deal with “The Man” and then have my insurance go up.
