What's worse now is that first time homebuyers are being pressured to purchase a larger, fancier home than they need by their realtors and mortgage bankers. They're saying "you should buy a home now because they are SO cheap! Rates are low! Buy buy buy! You could get the home of your dreams for only 200k and all the other homes in that neighborhood are worth 400k+! You're getting instant equity!" So these first time home buyers are looking at each other with big dollar signs in their eyes and go for the big fancy home instead. When in reality the home will continue to drop in value for the next 2-5 years. Right now a real estate agent will do ANYTHING to sell you a home, so first time home buyers beware!! Make sure you have someone that you trust with you when searching for your first home. Rates aren't any lower than they have been in the last 4 years. Yes, homes are dropping in value (as they should) but still you should never live outside of your means and become house poor like the brilliant author of this post has mentioned. :)
